Former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu has revealed that ex-President Muhammadu Buhari rejected a proposed N10 million State House food budget shortly after assuming office in 2015. In his newly released memoir, “According to the President”, Shehu recounted Buhari’s reaction: “When they told him N10 million was needed, he screamed and demanded it be reduced.” Buhari reportedly questioned, “Look at my table, what do I eat? How much does it cost?”

Shehu described Buhari’s diet as simple and healthy, including pap, akara, tuwo, beans, salads, poultry, and mutton.

The memoir also reveals Buhari declined a N400 million proposal to buy five customised cars, opting to use vehicles left by former President Jonathan. “They are all right for my use,” Buhari reportedly said.

Buhari also insisted on strict budget adherence and ended reliance on Presidential Intervention Funds. His frugal approach extended to rejecting a security vote request during a medical trip abroad.
