Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafra agitator and political activist, has gone on trial in Finland for alleged terrorism-related offences tied to his separatist campaign.

Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-born Biafra separatist and political activist, appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday as the Finnish government opened a terrorism trial against him.

Arrested in November 2024, Ekpa faces charges related to inciting violence, financing terrorism, and spreading unrest in Nigeria’s South-east through online platforms. Prosecutors allege his activities may meet the threshold for terrorism under Finnish law.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” said state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala, who is seeking a six-year prison sentence.

Ekpa has denied accusations of ordering weapons for Biafran groups or engaging in criminal conspiracies.

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), where Ekpa is referred to as Prime Minister, declared a two-day lockdown in Nigeria’s South-east to mark his court appearance.

“Our Prime Minister Simon Ekpa has been detained… Biafrans should honour him as a hero,” the group said in a statement.
