The election of the 267th pope will continue after black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling no consensus among cardinals on the first day of voting.

Over 130 cardinals gathered for the papal conclave in Vatican City following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday. Thousands filled St. Peter’s Square as the traditional smoke signal revealed no successful vote.

Vatican News stated: “Black smoke signalled the end of the first day of the conclave at 21:00… This means the conclave will continue tomorrow morning when the Cardinal electors will gather once more… to cast their votes again for the election of the 267th Pope.”

The conclave, one of the most secretive elections in the world, resumed this morning. Attendee Tom Hallett said, “I feel he will be Italian… It will be God’s choice.”
