A skier was killed Tuesday evening in an avalanche on Alaska’s Mount McKinley, Denali National Park officials said.

Nicholas Vizzini, 29, of Washington state, was descending the mountain with an unidentified snowboarder around 6:15 p.m. when the avalanche struck between 16,600 and 15,000 feet.

Park rangers responding to the scene quickly located the snowboarder on the avalanche’s surface. However, Mr. Vizzini was buried deeper in the debris. Rangers located him, created an airway, and performed CPR for 40 minutes. Efforts were stopped when it was determined that Vizzini had sustained traumatic injuries and had no pulse.

The snowboarder survived with minor injuries.

Mr. Vizzini is the second fatality on Mount McKinley during the 2025 climbing season. Earlier this month, Alex Chiu, 41, also from Washington, died after falling 3,000 feet onto a glacier.
