The Nigerian Army has begun investigating a soldier accused of beating a commercial bus driver to death at a checkpoint in Ondo State.

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of a commercial bus driver allegedly beaten by a soldier at a military checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State. According to Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, the driver, who was en route Abuja from Akure, died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo. Irabor explained that the altercation began when passengers demanded a refund after the bus developed a fault near the checkpoint.

“Consequently, the soldier showed up and displayed very uncouth and unprofessional conduct, resulting in an altercation with the driver,” he said. The army spokesperson noted that the brigade covered all medical expenses and has visited the deceased’s family, promising support and full accountability. “The soldier exhibited an act contrary to the Rules of Engagement,” Irabor added, assuring that the officer would face disciplinary action and the outcome made public.
