Omoyele Sowore accused both Nigeria and the U.S. of hypocrisy, insisting the country’s killings stem from bad governance, not religious persecution.

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused both the Nigerian government and the United States of hypocrisy in their handling of widespread killings across Nigeria.

Reacting to renewed calls by U.S. lawmakers for Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged Christian persecution, Sowore dismissed the claim as misleading. “There’s genocide against the poor, Muslims, Christians, and children… To now separate it and say maybe it’s one religion or the other, that’s dishonest,” he said.

He argued that insecurity stems from “irresponsible leadership,” not religion, adding, “They go to mosques and kill people… the people who killed them were probably Muslims.” Sowore accused Washington of “international hypocrisy,” citing its silence on Gaza.

He warned that framing Nigeria’s crisis as religious persecution only shields corrupt leaders from accountability. “The problem with Nigeria has nothing to do with religion,” he insisted.
