Sowore-led activists protest at Police HQ, demand IGP Egbetokun’s removal

“One retired officer is in jail for impersonating a police officer, while Egbetokun continues in office after retirement. This is unjust and unacceptable.”

A coalition of activists and lawyers led by former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore staged a protest at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, demanding the immediate removal of Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun. The demonstrators, who arrived at Louis Edet House by 10:20am, criticized President Bola Tinubu for extending Egbetokun’s tenure beyond the constitutional 35-year service limit, which the IGP reportedly reached last year.

The protesters described the National Assembly’s hurried amendment of the Police Act to accommodate the extension as unconstitutional. Sowore vowed sustained pressure until Tinubu “does the needful” to allow career progression for other officers. This comes after widespread condemnation from civil society groups and opposition figures who argue the extension violates statutory age/service limits. Daily Trust reports that Egbetokun’s continued stay allegedly blocks the promotion track of at least 20 senior officers next in line for the position.
