Omoyele Sowore met former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday to seek his support for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, with Jonathan pledging to raise the issue with President Tinubu.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday to discuss the continued detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Speaking after the meeting, Sowore disclosed that while Jonathan would not issue any public statement on the matter, he “acknowledges the need to end the chapter and encourage a solution that promotes healing.” According to him, Jonathan promised to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explore possible solutions.
In a Facebook post, Sowore wrote: “President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly… Particularly assuring was that he promised to meet Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss this issue as soon as possible.”
He added that Jonathan’s position aligns with growing calls for Kanu’s release from leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani. Sowore reiterated that “Nnamdi Kanu should be set free” and vowed to continue peaceful advocacy, including a planned #FreeNnamdiKanu march to the Presidential Villa on October 20.
Kanu remains in detention despite multiple court rulings ordering his release, fueling calls from civil society and human rights groups for his unconditional freedom.
