Omoyele Sowore has announced a peaceful march to Aso Rock on October 20 to demand the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, calling on political, traditional, and Igbo leaders to join.

Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared that he will lead a protest march in the nation’s capital on October 20 demanding the release of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Sowore made the announcement via his X handle, describing the action as “historic” and assuring that it will be conducted “peacefully and legally.”

He wrote, “We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 am.” In his call to action, Sowore urged governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders — especially those from the South-East — to participate. “No more empty noise. Let @CCSoludo, @SenatorAbaribe, @alexottiofr, @PeterObi, and all others who claim to care step up and join us in person,” he added.

Sowore further disclosed that he had reached out to key Igbo figures, including Anambra State Governor Soludo, Abia governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Peter Obi, though he lamented that some had not responded. “Alex Otti and Soludo neither took my calls nor responded to my messages. They promised to tell Mr. @PeterObi about our plans, although he is currently travelling,” he said, adding that he also contacted Atiku Abubakar and received tentative encouragement from other lawmakers.

Kanu has been in custody of the Department of State Services since his re-arrest in 2021. Despite several court rulings ordering his release, the federal government has not complied. The IPOB leader faces charges including terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement — all of which he has denied.
