Sowore has announced October 20 as the date for a protest march to Aso Rock to demand IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s release, drawing support from key pro-Biafra figures.

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, Omoyele Sowore, has fixed October 20 for a peaceful protest march to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a post on Thursday, Sowore announced, “We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7am.”

The activist, who also leads the #RevolutionNow movement, urged governors, lawmakers, traditional and religious leaders from the South-East to join him, stressing the need for concrete action beyond rhetoric. He specifically challenged Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Abia Governor Alex Otti, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi to participate.

Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, leader of MASSOB and BIM, have already pledged support for the march.

Kanu has been in Department of State Services custody since June 2021. Though the Court of Appeal discharged him in October 2022, the Supreme Court granted a stay of execution, prolonging his detention.
