Spain’s government has hinted the national team could withdraw from the 2026 World Cup if Israel qualify, citing the Gaza war.
Spain’s government has suggested the national team could withdraw from the 2026 World Cup if Israel are allowed to compete.
The tournament, to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is set to feature European champions Spain, who have made a strong start to qualifying. But Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has urged FIFA to exclude Israel, comparing the situation to Russia’s ban from international competitions after its invasion of Ukraine.
“Israel cannot continue to use any international platform to whitewash its image,” Sanchez said this week.
Patxi Lopez, spokesperson for Spain’s Socialist Group, said a boycott was possible if no action is taken: “We’ll consider it later.” Sports Minister Pilar Alegria added that “sport is not, and cannot be, an island” when human rights are at stake.
Israel, currently third in their qualifying group, still have a chance to secure a play-off place. FIFA has not yet responded to Spain’s demands.
