SSANU and NASU will stage a nationwide protest Thursday over unpaid salaries and unmet welfare demands, warning of a possible indefinite strike.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have declared a one-day protest for Thursday, October 9, over the Federal Government’s failure to address their demands.

Operating under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), the two unions directed branches nationwide to convene emergency meetings on Wednesday to mobilise members for protest activities, which will include marches, placard displays, and press briefings.

The decision followed a JAC meeting on October 6, which reviewed the government’s response to their grievances after several ultimatums expired without resolution.

The unions cited unresolved issues such as inequitable sharing of the N50bn earned allowances, delays in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement, non-payment of two months’ salaries, arrears of 25–35 per cent increments, and failure to remit third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

In a memo signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, members were instructed to ensure full participation.

Ibrahim warned that if the government continues to ignore their demands, the unions could escalate to an indefinite strike. “Ours will not be the ‘mother of all strikes’; it will be the grandfather of all strikes,” he said.
