Starlink restores connectivity in Lagos, expands service across Africa

Starlink has resumed internet activations across Nigeria and key African cities, months after halting new subscriptions due to capacity and regulatory issues.

Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has resumed new activations in Nigeria and other African countries following a months-long suspension caused by bandwidth limits and regulatory delays.

The suspension, which began in November 2024, left over 60,000 Nigerian users in limbo and affected more than 100,000 users continent-wide, particularly in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Warri, Nairobi, and Accra.

“Too many users are trying to access the Starlink service, and there isn’t enough bandwidth to support additional customers,” the company had stated at the time.

With recent infrastructure upgrades, Starlink has now lifted restrictions in major Nigerian cities and across Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

“This marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide and transforming connectivity across the country,” Starlink said. “We have officially resumed activations for customers nationwide, with Lagos, Abuja, and other high-demand regions leading this exciting revival.”

Before the pause, Starlink had also raised subscription fees in Nigeria, effective January 27, 2025, for existing users.
