“The proliferation of checkpoints, illegal taxation, and poor infrastructure are key contributors to price inflation and inefficiencies in the food supply chain.”
ABUJA — The 36 state governors under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have agreed to dismantle illegal roadblocks and multiple tax points across Nigeria to combat rising food prices.
The resolution followed an emergency NGF meeting in Abuja, which ended early Thursday. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who read the communique, said these illegal practices were driving food inflation.
Signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the communique stated: “The proliferation of checkpoints, illegal taxation, and poor infrastructure are key contributors to price inflation and inefficiencies in the food supply chain.”
Briefed by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and ministers of Defence, Agriculture, Livestock, and Transportation, the governors pledged collaboration with federal authorities.
“Governors acknowledged the urgency… and expressed commitment to streamline levies and improve goods movement across states,” the communique added.
Ribadu declined to comment on the meeting’s outcome. The move comes amid nationwide concern over food insecurity and rising transport costs.
