With the May 7 REAL ID deadline approaching, U.S. states are launching emergency measures to help residents meet federal ID requirements for domestic air travel.
DMVs in New Jersey, Arkansas, and Illinois have expanded operating hours, with Chicago opening a “REAL ID Supercenter.” In New York, mobile DMV vans are issuing REAL IDs at the International Auto Show.
“81% of travelers at TSA checkpoints already have a REAL ID or another approved ID,” said Daniel Velez of TSA New England. “We fully expect the number to increase as states ramp up services.”
New Jersey’s “Emergency Issuance Program” targets travelers facing urgent flight needs. Meanwhile, 28 Kentucky senators are requesting an extension, citing long waits and limited appointments.
“Despite significant progress, Kentucky is simply not fully prepared for complete implementation,” the senators wrote.
