A ninth grader from Canyon View Junior High in Utah died after a self-inflicted gunshot during a school trip to South Fork Park, authorities confirmed.

A ninth-grade student from Canyon View Junior High in Orem, Utah, died after a self-inflicted gunshot during a school field trip on September 24, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at South Fork Park in Provo Canyon. Local outlet Fox 13 reported that the student, whose identity has not been released, brought a gun on the trip and shot themselves as classmates prepared to return to school. Teachers quickly moved students away while alerting authorities.

Deputies and medical teams responded, and the student was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where they later died. “Unfortunately, the student did succumb to their injuries. No other students nor staff were injured,” UCSO said.

Classmate Ian Campbell recalled hearing “a loud pop” before seeing teachers rush toward the scene. “What happened was pretty scary,” he told ABC 4.

The Alpine School District has made counseling resources available to help students and staff cope with the tragedy.
