Protesters say the name change threatens the legacy and identity of the institution.
Hundreds of commuters and staff were left stranded on Monday as students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan staged a protest against the renaming of the institution by the Oyo State Government.
The protest erupted following Governor Seyi Makinde’s announcement that the school would now bear the name “Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan,” in honour of the first civilian governor of old Oyo State.
Students blocked the main entrance gates and barricaded the busy Sango–Eleyele Road, bringing vehicular movement to a halt and preventing access to the institution.
Many of the students argued that the change erases the identity and historical significance of the institution, which has long been recognized by its original name.
