Students still learning under trees four years after Lagos spent N280m on Epe school

A N288 million classroom block intended to ease severe overcrowding at Odomola Secondary School in Lagos has remained incomplete since 2021, forcing teachers to merge classes and conduct lessons under trees.

A N288 million classroom expansion at Odomola Secondary School in Epe, Lagos State, has remained unfinished four years after it was awarded, leaving students packed “shoulder to shoulder” in overcrowded classes.

Teachers told FIJ that some classrooms hold up to 160 students, with lessons sometimes conducted under trees due to inadequate space. “It’s not conducive at all,” one said.

The 18-classroom block, awarded in 2021 to FBS Construction Engineering Services Limited by the Lagos State Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), remains uncompleted despite external intervention by an NGO earlier this year.

SCRPS denied abandonment, stating that “reviews in job specifications” delayed progress and that the contractor would soon be recalled to site.

Meanwhile, Epe’s population continues to grow rapidly, increasing pressure on the school. “People know our students perform well, so more parents bring their children. But the new block is just there, waiting,” a teacher lamented.
