A new study by the University of Oxford suggests that walking as little as 7,000 steps a day could reduce cancer risk by 11%.

The study, involving over 85,000 UK participants, tracked daily activity using wearable devices over six years.

Researchers found a consistent link between higher step counts and lower risk of developing 13 types of cancer, including colon, liver, lung, and breast cancer. The risk dropped further with 9,000 steps (16%), but benefits plateaued beyond that.

“More steps meant lower cancer risk, regardless of how fast those steps were taken,” the report noted. While brisk walking showed some added benefit, overall daily activity was more crucial.

Replacing sitting with light or moderate activity also lowered cancer risk, but switching from light to moderate intensity didn’t yield extra gains.

The study emphasized accessibility. “Even light activity like walking can make a difference,” researchers said.

Experts highlight the need for long-term studies but agree: regular movement, even in short bursts, could be a simple, effective tool in cancer prevention.
