STUDY: Humans hit functional peak At 60…

Scientists say human capability peaks closer to age 60, as wisdom, emotional regulation and decision-making strengths outweigh youthful speed.

A new study challenges the cultural belief that humans reach peak performance in their 20s, revealing that overall functioning may not crest until the late 50s or early 60s.

Researchers Gilles Gignac and Marcin Zajenkowski analyzed 16 psychological dimensions spanning intelligence, personality, emotional regulation and decision-making and found that “overall functioning continues developing through midlife, reaching its apex around age 60.”

Published in Intelligence, the study indicates that while physical power and processing speed decline from the mid-20s, gains in crystallized intelligence, financial literacy, moral reasoning and emotional stability continue rising for decades.

The findings suggest that individuals best suited for high-stakes decision-making roles are “unlikely to be younger than 40 or older than 65.”

Real-world data backs the model, with peak earnings, career prestige and political leadership clustering in midlife. The research argues that aging should be seen not as decline but as the culmination of psychological development.
