Sudan’s RSF Declares Rival Government as Conflict with Army Deepens

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced the formation of its own government, marking two years of brutal conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo said Tuesday his forces and civilian allies “have chosen a different path,” declaring the “Government of Peace and Unity,” a “broad civilian coalition.” “We are building the only realistic future for Sudan,” Dagalo added.
The RSF began creating a parallel government in February, signing a charter with allied political and armed groups. The move complicates international peace efforts, coinciding with a high-level summit hosted by the UK, Germany, France, the AU, and EU.
Recently, the RSF captured the Zamzam camp in Darfur, displacing 400,000 people, the UN said. While the SAF reclaimed Khartoum last month, heavy fighting continues elsewhere, including in Darfur, where El Fasher remains the army’s last major holdout.
