The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has given reasons why he left some of his key players off the squad for this year’s Unity Cup.

Chelle unveiled a squad featuring 10 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) players and retained veteran Ahmed Musa for the tournament, which kicks off with a clash against Ghana on May 28. The coach emphasized the need to build a fresh identity for the team by integrating emerging talents.

“We have a lot of players in Nigeria, so we need to give chances to them so they can show us their quality,” Chelle told NFF Media. “We have a project as a group—we want to create an identity, so we need players who can learn quickly.”

He described the Unity Cup as an opportunity to test new systems and players ahead of September’s crucial fixtures. The decision has sparked debate, with some fans questioning the exclusion of star players while others back the long-term vision.
