U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering easing sanctions on Syria after Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa proposed a Ukraine-style minerals agreement and the construction of a Trump Tower in Damascus, according to The Times on May 12.

Al-Sharaa, who took power following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in December, is offering U.S. companies access to Syria’s mineral wealth to end years of isolation.

He also seeks a meeting with Trump during the president’s trip to Saudi Arabia, though this remains unconfirmed.

Trump said he is open to easing Assad-era sanctions, stating he wants to give Syria a “fresh start.”

The offer mirrors the recent U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal signed on April 30 after months of tense negotiations.
