“Their position is steeped in ignorance of what the law is on the matter,” said Ogun Attorney General Sina Ogungbade.
The revered monarch, who passed on July 13 at 91, was buried according to Islamic traditions—an action ICIR calls illegal and culturally offensive.
Osimodi noted that although the king had withdrawn support from traditional rites in his later years, he once actively participated in major festivals.
Soldiers reportedly prevented traditionalists from hijacking the burial, in line with the Awujale’s stated wishes.
Tension arose when traditionalists arrived at the royal residence in Ijebu Ode seeking to assert control over the burial.
