Police say the girl conspired with a family friend, using his phone to send threatening messages before being apprehended.

A 16-year-old SS2 student from a private school in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has been apprehended after faking her own kidnap and demanding ₦2 million ransom.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu said the girl, a native of Izzi LGA, conspired with a family friend to stage the abduction. She allegedly used his phone to text her brother, claiming to be held captive and demanding payment for her release.

“She blocked his number after refusing to provide details of the supposed kidnappers,” Ukandu said. “She later unblocked him and sent a bank account number belonging to the family friend.”

Police tracked the phone, raided the residence, and arrested all involved.

Initially, the girl claimed she was attacked and lost consciousness while shopping for second-hand clothes. She told police she often dreams of being kidnapped.

She has been reunited with her family, but investigations are ongoing.
