Telecom operators warn of service shutdown over diesel blockade

The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) warned that over 16,000 sites could shut down after NOGASA and NUPENG allegedly blocked diesel access

A dispute between telecom tower manager IHS Towers and the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) is threatening to disrupt telecom services in Lagos, Kaduna and Delta states. IHS accused two NOGASA member companies of misappropriating diesel meant for base stations, while NOGASA countered that IHS is avoiding payment for supplied fuel.

The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) warned that over 16,000 sites could shut down after NOGASA and NUPENG allegedly blocked diesel access, potentially affecting millions of telecom, banking, health and education users. ALTON called the blockade sabotage, while NUPENG denied involvement and NOGASA insisted debts must be settled.

The National Association of Telecom Subscribers (NATCOMS) urged Minister Bosun Tijani to involve President Bola Tinubu to avert a “telecom blackout.” The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) also reported frequent fibre cuts, site access denials and theft, warning such disruptions threaten national security and essential service
