Kwara tertiary institution students selling sperm, eggs amid economic hardship

Kwara lawmakers have raised concerns after reports revealed that tertiary students are selling sperm and eggs to cope with economic hardship.

Tertiary students in Kwara State are resorting to selling their sperm and eggs to survive the harsh economic situation, The Guardian reports.

A source disclosed that students approach intermediaries, often medical personnel with established connections, to express willingness to sell. Male donors reportedly earn between N30,000 and N50,000 depending on negotiation. The development has sparked concerns among stakeholders, who condemned the practice as exploitative and dangerous.

The Kwara State House of Assembly (KSHA) has also expressed alarm over what it described as unregulated sperm and egg donation among students. Hon. Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, representing Owode/Onire Constituency, raised the issue, warning that many students of Kwara State University, Malete, and the State Polytechnic are engaging in the trade without understanding its consequences.

“Many students, due to financial hardship, are lured by monetary incentives without a proper understanding of the medical, psychological, social, ethical, and moral consequences of their actions,” she said, urging government sensitization campaigns.
