A father in Texas died while rescuing his family during severe flooding along the Guadalupe River on July 4, as search efforts continue for 27 missing children.

Julian Ryan was praised by relatives as a “true hero” after he died protecting his fiancée, children, and mother. “Julian gave his life for his family, passing as a true hero,” a GoFundMe statement from the family read. “His sudden departure has left an unfillable void in all our lives.”

The floods swept through the Mystic Christian summer camp near Kerrville, northwest of San Antonio. Authorities said 27 girls remain unaccounted for.

The river rose more than 20 feet in under two hours during Independence Day celebrations. Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. said, “Today will be a hard day. Please pray for our community.”

Emergency crews rescued people trapped in trees, while others were urged to avoid flooded roads due to debris and potential structural damage.
