At least three people were killed and several others seriously injured when a regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany on Sunday, authorities confirmed.
The accident occurred near Riedlingen, about 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich. Police said the cause remains under investigation. “Storms passed through the area before the crash,” officials noted, adding that they are assessing whether weather played a role.
The RE55 regional express train derailed in a forested area between Zweifaltendorf and Zell in the Biberach district around 6:10 p.m. local time. About 100 passengers were onboard when at least two carriages left the tracks.
Images from the scene showed train cars toppled on their sides as rescue workers, including four helicopters, responded.
Germany’s national railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, said it is cooperating with investigators and extended its condolences to the victims’ families. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his sympathies in a post on X, saying he mourned the dead and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
