Three patients at AKTH died after KEDCO cut electricity over unpaid bills, prompting outrage before power was restored.
Three patients on life support at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) have died after the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) disconnected the facility over an outstanding debt of nearly ₦950 million.
Hospital spokesperson, Hauwa Dutse, confirmed on Monday that four patients were on ventilatory support when power was cut on Friday, leaving three dead. “On that very day, Friday, there were four patients on admission, and due to the power outage, three of them died,” she said.
KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala, said the hospital owes ₦949.88 million and must also settle its August bill of ₦108.95 million within 10 working days.
The hospital management said power has since been restored after an emergency meeting involving KEDCO, AKTH officials, and the Kano State Commissioner of Police.
