The Presidency has confirmed that Finance Minister Wale Edun is seriously ill, prompting CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso to assume his duties at key global meetings while President Tinubu seeks a potential replacement.
The Presidency has confirmed that Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is “indisposed,” following reports that he suffered a serious medical condition. A top government source described his illness as “very serious,” claiming he may not be able to return to work.
In Edun’s absence, Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington beginning Monday. “Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance,” presidential aide Bayo Onanuga said in a statement.
Sources disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has started discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement amid mounting economic pressures. Edun, a key figure in Tinubu’s fiscal reforms, was reportedly active in budget discussions days before his health deteriorated.
