President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday ended the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, ordering Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and the state assembly to resume duties on Thursday.
President Bola Tinubu has lifted the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State, paving the way for Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other suspended officials to return to office on Thursday, September 18.
In a statement, Tinubu said the proclamation, which began in March, followed “a total paralysis of governance” caused by a rift between the governor and the state assembly.
“It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State shall end with effect from midnight today,” he said.
Tinubu insisted the intervention was constitutional and necessary to prevent anarchy but acknowledged over 40 lawsuits had challenged the decision. He said intelligence reports now indicate “a new spirit of understanding” among stakeholders and urged leaders to prioritize cooperation for peace and development.
