Tributes poured in from former President Obasanjo, General Babangida, former VP Yemi Osinbajo, governors, and party leaders.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari will be buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday, after his body is flown in from London, where he died Sunday at age 82.
President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former leaders, and governors joined mourners in honouring the late military and civilian head of state.
Shettima had travelled to London on Tinubu’s orders to accompany the body back home. Flags across Nigeria are flying at half-mast for seven days as ordered by President Tinubu.
“Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” Tinubu said in a personal tribute. “His legacy of service and sacrifice endures.”
Tributes poured in from former President Obasanjo, General Babangida, former VP Yemi Osinbajo, governors, and party leaders. “Nigeria has lost a true patriot,” Osinbajo stated, while Obasanjo called him “a comrade and co-patriot.”
The late president’s final years were marked by recurring health issues, including numerous medical trips abroad. Yet, his influence remained strong.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as elected president from 2015 to 2023, is remembered for his anti-corruption drive and commitment to discipline in public service.
