President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging him to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s elections and strengthen institutional reforms.
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The ceremony, held at the State House, Abuja, came a week after the Senate confirmed Amupitan’s nomination on October 16.
Tinubu charged the professor of Law to “protect the integrity of our elections and electoral process,” stressing that “the integrity of our electoral system must be beyond reproach.”
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the sixth substantive head of INEC.
Speaking earlier during his Senate screening, Amupitan promised to prioritise electoral reforms that would “ensure transparent polls where even the loser will congratulate the winner.”
The 58-year-old academic, who until his appointment served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos, resumed duties at INEC headquarters immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.
He hails from Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
