President Bola Tinubu has directed federal agencies to address concerns raised by the U.S. and UAE over recent visa policy changes affecting Nigerians. According to his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the U.S. cited increased visa overstays by Nigerians and difficulties accessing applicants’ records. Tinubu tasked ministries and agencies to work together to ensure compliance with international obligations and improve identity verification systems for consular services.
“The President calls on all Nigerians to respect the immigration regulations of their host countries and to uphold the integrity of the permits and privileges granted to them under the laws of those jurisdictions,” the statement read.
While no formal notification was received from the UAE, the Nigerian government noted visa issuance is proceeding “in a gradual and orderly manner.” Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to diplomatic relations and his administration’s 4-D foreign policy agenda—Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora. He pledged to enhance data-sharing and protect Nigerians’ global interests
