Tinubu swears in Prof. Joash Amupitan as new INEC Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, urging him to safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s elections.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ceremony took place at about 1:50 p.m. inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

During the swearing-in, Tinubu urged Amupitan to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC. He said the commission must remain independent, transparent, and accountable in managing elections across the country.

Amupitan’s inauguration comes a week after the Senate confirmed his appointment on October 16, following a rigorous screening exercise.

The law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria succeeds Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended recently.
