President Bola Tinubu will select his 2027 running mate only after the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its next convention, according to Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Thursday, Onanuga addressed the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s second-term endorsement at the recent APC stakeholders’ summit in Gombe, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima was notably omitted.
“That’s what happened under Buhari, he was nominated first and later picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once,” Onanuga said.
He dismissed speculation of a rift between Tinubu and Shettima as “beer parlour gossip,” adding, “From what I know, they have an excellent working relationship.”
Onanuga also rejected comparisons to Tinubu’s time as Lagos governor, when he had multiple deputies.
“There were specific political circumstances each time,” he said. “So, it’s wrong to say he has a pattern of discarding deputies.”
He labelled rumours about Seyi Tinubu being vice president as “absolute nonsense.”
