Apart from Kwankwaso, three serving federal lawmakers on the platform of the NNPP met last week with the APC national chairman ahead of their formal declaration for the ruling party.

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s potential defection from NNPP to APC has triggered internal discord within the ruling party, with sources revealing tensions between President Bola Tinubu’s camp and allies of APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje. The move, reportedly brokered by Tinubu, threatens the ambitions of a Senate leader eyeing Kano’s 2027 governorship ticket under APC. Kwankwaso is expected to meet Tinubu upon the president’s return from Europe, while three NNPP federal lawmakers have already held talks with Ganduje ahead of their formal defection.

The planned crossover has exposed factional divides, particularly in Kano politics where Kwankwaso’s influence remains strong. “This isn’t just about party membership but a recalibration of 2027 calculations,” a party insider disclosed. The defecting lawmakers – Senator Sumaila Kawu and Reps Aliyu Madaki and Kabiru Rurum – signal growing realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
