The Nigerian government spent N26.38bn on the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF) within President Bola Tinubu’s first 18 months in office, according to data from Govspend. The funds, disbursed between July 2023 and December 2024, covered operational and logistical upkeep.

In comparison, former President Muhammadu Buhari spent N81.80bn on the fleet over seven years.

High spending, experts argue, is partly due to the naira’s weakness against the dollar and the large number of aircraft in the fleet. Major disbursements peaked in August 2024, including N5.08bn on April 23—the largest single transaction.

Aviation engineer Frank Oruye warned that the fleet’s diversity increases costs. “Each aircraft needs specialised support equipment,” he said. “You can’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

Retired Group Capt John Ojukutu called for a reduction to four aircraft. “These planes aren’t flying regularly. Are they all due for C-checks every year?” he asked.

The PAF, managed by the Nigerian Air Force, has faced growing criticism amid economic strain.
