On October 1, 1960, Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa proclaimed Nigeria an independent nation, calling it “a great testimony to the maturity of our people, and the determination of our leaders.” Speaking at the Race Course in Lagos, he urged unity, service, and peace, pledging Nigeria’s resources “in the service of Africa and the world.”
