Trevoh Chalobah will only miss one domestic fixture after his red card in Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Brighton at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea face Liverpool next in the Premier League, with the defender set to return after the international break.
Trevoh Chalobah will serve a one-match suspension following his red card in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday. The defender was dismissed in the second half after bringing down Diego Gomez, who was through on goal. Referee Simon Hooper consulted the VAR monitor before showing a straight red.
Under FA rules, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity carries a one-game ban, unlike violent conduct which brings three. Chelsea confirmed Chalobah’s suspension applies only to domestic competitions, meaning he will miss next Saturday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool but remains eligible for the Champions League tie with Benfica on Tuesday.
It marks the second consecutive week a Chelsea player has been dismissed for the same offence, after Robert Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United.
Brighton capitalised on Chalobah’s sending-off, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice and Maxim De Cuyper adding another to seal a 3-1 victory. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admitted the red card “completely changed the plan.”
