President Donald Trump has revealed he has “a group of very wealthy people” ready to purchase TikTok, the Chinese-owned app banned in the U.S. over national security concerns.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump hinted at a pending deal, saying, “I’ll tell you in about two weeks.” However, any sale would still need approval from the Chinese government. Trump noted he believes President Xi Jinping “will probably do it.”
The U.S. had passed a law mandating TikTok’s sale by January 19, but Trump has delayed its enforcement three times. The latest extension gives TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, until September 17 to sell.
TikTok previously challenged the law but lost at the U.S. Supreme Court. A 2024 deal to sell the app collapsed amid U.S.-China tensions. It remains unclear if Trump’s current buyers are the same as before. The BBC has contacted TikTok for comment.
