President Trump has declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” citing ongoing mass killings of Christians by Islamist groups across the nation.
President Donald Trump on Friday designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” condemning the widespread killing of Christians in the West African nation. “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling the violence a “mass slaughter” by radical Islamists.
Trump said he has directed Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., and Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., to investigate and report on the crisis. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria,” he said.
The designation follows reports of escalating attacks in northern and central Nigeria, where Islamist groups like Boko Haram and Fulani militants have targeted Christian villages. According to Open Doors, 70% of all Christians killed worldwide last year died in Nigeria.
Mark Walker, Trump’s ambassador-designate for International Religious Freedom, said, “Even being conservative, it’s probably 4,000 to 8,000 Christians killed annually.” Nigerian officials, however, deny systematic targeting of Christians.
