Trump demands Apple shift iPhone production to U.S. or face 25% tariff

“I expect their iPhones… will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Washington, D.C.– Former President Donald Trump on Friday threatened Apple with a 25% tariff unless it moves iPhone production back to the United States.

“I expect their iPhones… will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

His comments follow CEO Tim Cook’s statement that the majority of U.S.-bound iPhones will soon be produced in India.

Trump had expressed frustration with Cook during his Middle East trip, saying, “Tim, you’re my friend… but now I hear you’re building all over India.”

Apple has long cited the U.S. skills gap and high costs as barriers to domestic production.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives called the idea “a fairy tale,” estimating U.S.-made iPhones could cost $3,500.

Apple recently announced a $500 billion U.S. investment to expand facilities and appease concerns.

The tariff threat could lead to higher iPhone prices as Apple weighs its next manufacturing moves.
