KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, following Trump’s inconclusive summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskiy said Trump extended the invitation during a phone call lasting more than 90 minutes on Saturday, later joined by European and NATO officials. “We will discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” Zelenskiy posted on X, adding: “I am grateful for the invitation.”

Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska ended without agreement on a ceasefire, with the U.S. leader instead urging a direct push toward a peace deal. Kyiv and its allies insist that negotiations must first be preceded by a ceasefire.

Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko said “nothing happened” at the summit, noting that Putin “did not back down from his ultimatum.”

Still, Zelenskiy highlighted “positive signals” from Washington on possible security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any future settlement.
