President Donald Trump has warned that American-born criminals could soon be expelled from the U.S., suggesting it may be his next major move.
“We also have a lot of bad people that have been here for a long time,” Trump said Tuesday during a tour of a new migrant detention center in the Everglades. “Some of them were born in our country. I think we ought to get them the hell out of here too.”
The president made the comments at the so-called “Alligator Alcatraz,” a swamp-surrounded facility built in just seven days to detain up to 3,000 undocumented immigrants.
“This facility will house some of the most menacing migrants, the most vicious people on the planet,” he said.
Though courts have ruled citizens cannot be deported, Trump’s remarks echo earlier suggestions of extreme penalties for American criminals.
Despite criticism from Democrats, Native groups, and environmentalists, Trump said, “I couldn’t care less.”
