President Donald Trump indicated plans to meet with New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, saying they will “work something out” despite their past political clashes.
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he plans to meet with New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and that they will “work something out,” according to a report from Los Angeles Times.
Speaking to reporters in West Palm Beach, Fla., Trump indicated a willingness to engage with the incoming Democratic leader, despite previously labeling him a “communist” and threatening to pull federal funds from New York.
“The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us. We’ll work something out,” Trump told reporters while preparing to return to Washington from his Florida estate. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that Trump was referring to Mamdani, who assumes office in January, and that no date has been set for the meeting.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old former state lawmaker, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo by nearly nine percentage points and emerged as a prominent figure opposing Trump’s anti-immigrant policies. The mayor-elect previously said he planned to reach out to the White House, emphasizing that the relationship would be “critical to the success of the city.”
Trump added, “We want to see everything work out well for New York,” signaling a potential detente between the Republican president and the Democratic political star.
His comments came as he also indicated that the U.S. may soon hold discussions with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying, “I’ll talk to anybody.”
