Trump says Modi agrees to halt Russian oil purchases

President Donald Trump asserted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia, though India has yet to confirm the claim.

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally told him that India would cease purchasing Russian oil. “There will be no oil. He’s not buying oil,” Trump said, adding that the transition would not happen immediately but “within a short period of time.”

The White House framed the move as part of a broader U.S. effort to pressure Moscow to end its war in Ukraine, with Trump declaring: “That’s a big step.” So far, neither the Indian government nor its embassy in Washington has publicly confirmed the commitment.

In response, Russia expressed confidence that its energy partnership with India would continue uninterrupted. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak affirmed that Russian supplies are “economically advantageous and practical,” and remains optimistic about ongoing cooperation.
