Trump has long shown “affinity for Britain,” citing his mother’s Scottish roots and admiration for the royal family
The United States and Britain are expected to announce a limited trade agreement Thursday, potentially shaping President Donald Trump’s ongoing tariff policy. According to The New York Times and Politico, the deal may be a framework rather than a finalized agreement. Trump imposed 10 percent tariffs on global imports, including Britain, on April 2, but paused higher duties on several nations for talks.
Trump wrote that a “major trade deal” would be announced with a “big, and highly respected country.” A White House press conference is scheduled for 10:00 am. Downing Street confirmed Prime Minister Keir Starmer will update the public later today.
“Any deal with the US is likely to be damage limitation rather than an economic boost,” said Jonathan Portes of King’s College London.
London may reduce its digital services tax in exchange for US tariff relief. Analysts caution this deal will likely be symbolic, ahead of an EU-UK summit set for May 19.
