A recent New Republic analysis argues that President Trump is systematically undermining U.S. democratic institutions by converting law enforcement and media into tools of power and suppressing dissent.
The New Republic contends that the Trump administration is entering “its most anti-Constitutional phase yet,” asserting that the president is executing a long-forewarned plan to “demolish American democracy.”
Central to that argument is the claim that federal law enforcement and the justice system are being weaponized against regime critics. The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey—coming soon after Trump called for prosecution of political adversaries—serves as a warning that “federal law enforcement is now a thoroughly political instrument.”
The article further highlights a series of strategies labeled as “dots” in the administration’s playbook. These include rebranding “Antifa” as a “domestic terrorist organization,” deploying military forces domestically, transforming the media into propaganda arms, and consolidating corporate support behind the regime.
The author warns that while the situation is dire, it is not hopeless. “Now is not the time to curl up in despair,” she writes, calling for active defense of institutions, legal challenges, and coordinated resistance.
